This piece is a brief exploration into the history of the Stenography machine. Through the deconstruction and reconstruction of a vintage Samsonite stenography machine, I explore some of the philosophical concept surround this small object. A showcase of a piece of machinery that has witnessed and transformed so much of our history. 3 1/2 minute Super 8 film shot with Kodak Tri-X B&W Reversal, and then was hand processed, scanned, and digitally edited. Shot at Banning State Park, this piece is a rumination of being haunted by a past behavior, by expectations or perceptions of ourselves. The feeling of an inescapable nature or course of things. The race against a shadow, and the carved out time we've build with it. Images of scars on the trees and well worn paths, particularly the ones that have all ready been traversed. Ruins of an old quarry building that once cut and process sandstone for construction. Iron bleeds up from the floor, and people use it as paint to leave their mark as they pass by. Running water of the Kettle river washes through and away of what remains. A cold winter. A setting sun. A disruption of time. The feeling of a predetermined fate.
